Leave the building first. Do not switch anything on or off, including lights, and do not use a phone inside. Once you are outside and clear, call your gas utility's emergency line, then call us. If the smell is strong, treat it as an evacuation rather than an errand. This is the one plumbing situation where doing nothing yourself is the correct action.
Can I run a gas line myself?
It is not work to take on without a licence. Beyond the obvious risk, gas work is permitted and inspected in most jurisdictions, an incorrect line can void appliance warranties and home insurance, and undersized pipe causes problems that show up later as appliances underperforming rather than as an obvious fault.
Do I need a permit to add a gas line?
Generally yes. New gas piping is permitted and inspected work in most jurisdictions here, and we handle that as part of the job.
